HOW TO: Remove yourself from a Facebook event

Back in December, Facebook made a minor change to its Events feature, replacing “Attending,” “Maybe Attending,” and “Not Attending” with “Join,” “Maybe” and “Decline”. Since then, it has become impossible to remove yourself from an event. But today, I found the solution, so follow the guide!

EDIT: This article was posted a few months ago and since then the FB settings changed. All you have to do is click “x” when you see your name at the top of the “invited” list on the left-hand side and voilà, you can remove yourself from the event without having to go through the trick that I posted below! Hope it helps!

To remove yourself from an event, it is no longer possible to click on “Remove event”. Instead, this is what you have to do:

1) Click on “Decline”

Event

2) On the left-hand side, click on “Invited”

Event-Invited

3) On the drop-down menu, click on “Declined”

Event-Decline

4) Find your name and click on the “x” next to it

5) You’re done!

Hope it helps :)

unfortunately doesn’t work with events that don’t allow you to see the guest list :(

Thank you! I don’t know why they’re making this so difficult. They keep hiding the option to remove events. I thought they’d finally taken away that option entirely.

Found an easier way, especially if the event has thousands of “inviteds”. if you are at the events page and click “maybe” (and this might work for join or decline, I haven’t tried them) your name and profile pic show up under the “maybe” attending list on the left side of the page, with the little “x” you can click to remove yourself from the event

    • Thanks for this Amy! You’re absolutely right – they’ve recently added that option, I don’t think it was there when I wrote the article in January!

I also noticed that on the left-hand side under “Invited”, your name appears at the top of list and next to it there is a little “x”, on which you can click to remove yourself from the event! It wasn’t there before, so it seems that that they made it easier for users, which is a good thing :)

      Thanks for dropping by!

That doesnt work..!! The only thing that happens when you do this is that you show up as not attending on the ‘Not Going’ list, I have found no way of actually removing yourself from the event entirely! Clicking on any x does not do the trick. You  are still on the guest list, I want to delete myself entirely!!

        •  If you go to the event list page (before accepting)… look in the upper right hand corner and see the little action asteriks (it’s next to today’s date)… click on this and select “event invites”… when the invite list pops up, “X” the event you don’t want listed and it will be deleted from your calendar.

Thank you! I was getting daily email notifications whenever people posted to this event and could not figure out how to remove myself. I had to log on from my computer – my phone app did not even offer me the option to decline.
    Thanks again!

Infortunately clicking the x in maybe just changes your status to not going… you’ll see that in the top right hand corner as a drop down list in case you change your mind and want to go.

    • Hi MissEAG!

The article was posted 5 months ago. Since then, the settings have changed.

All you have to do is click “x” when you see your name at the top of the “invited” list on the left-hand side and voilà, you can remove yourself from the event without having to go through the trick that I posted above (which, at the time, was the only way to remove yourself).

      Hope it helps!

  • Actually – you just need to go to the event page, and in the left column you should be on the top of the “invited” list. Just click the X next to you name.

May have changed since you made this post. I don’t envy anyone that writes facebook tips, because they’re outdated in a manner of weeks…

    • Hi Chris

Thanks for dropping by – indeed, Facebook changed the settings since then, I wrote this in January!

When I face a problem and can’t find the solution online and then finally find the solution, I like to write an article about it because I just think that it may help a few people on the way. When you think about it, most webpages on the Internet are outdated anyway…but that’s fine as long as people found what they looked for at the time.

      Have a nice weekend!Natalie

    thanks so much!

  • Thanks!!! this is SO not intuitive. but you made my day! Now I can peacefully sync my google calendar with Facebook events without clogging it with events I am not interested in.

    Thank you!

Thank you thank you thank you! I find it completely invasive that people can invite me then spam me with stuff I don’t want to hear!!
